Bonjour Guy, ton actualité est particulièrement chargée, puisque sitôt ton dernier disque "Song from the Bilton House" terminé que tu as enchaîné avec le nouveau The TANGENT "Not as Good as a Book". Es tu un forcené du travail ?
Oh que oui ! J'aime composé et jouer,... donc je suis toujours partant quand on me sollicite pour une collaboration ou un projet Mon implication sur TANGENT est bien différente de celle sur mes albums solos où j'assure complètement la responsabilité des compositions et de la production. Avec TANGENT mon plaisir c'est d'être juste le chanteur et/ou le musicien acoustique et de participer aux arrangements vocaux et musicaux. Sur mes oeuvres, je suis obligé de penser et de veiller à tout et donc totalement responsable du rendu qualitatif final!
Après toutes ces années riches en créations musicales, es tu satisfait du résultat de "Song from the Bilton House" ?
Tout à fait !
Les chansons sont bonnes, la production excellente et je suis aussi satisfait de l'artwork vraiment réussi et conforme à ce que j'attendais, donc j'ai toutes les raisons d'être satisfait au final.
"Song from the Bilton House" raconte une histoire issue d'une anecdote que tu as vécue en tournée je crois, peux tu nous en dire un peu plus ?
Tu penses à “Inner Moment” ? Cette chanson parle du courage de se lancer dans un voyage au cours duquel il faudra te trouver toi même, te débarrasser de tes démons et devenir un homme meilleur à ton retour... Un voyage initiatique en somme.
La pochette de l'album me fait penser à cet hôtel lugubre dans Psychose de Hitchcock . Souhaitais tu une atmosphère inquiétante dans l'artwork ou simplement l'esthétique t'a plu ?
L'album s' inspire d' une vieille maison aperçue près de Bilston en 2006. Elle était abandonnée, en ruine et semblait mystérieuse. C'est cette ambiance que Rosie a voulu rendre dans tout l' artwork. Le jeu sur la lumière, les vieilles pièces, les meubles vétustes, font de cet endroit un lieu où des fantômes pourraient hurler . Chacune des chansons se situe dans une piéce différente, vous retrouverez ainsi dans le livret un plan au sol de chaque pièce correspondant à un titre.
Tes compositions se caractérisent souvent par un sens de la mélodie très poussé. D'où te vient ce sens aigu de la mélodie ?
Je sais pas... Cependant, j'ai toujours aimé les chansons avec un air entrainant, où une musique avec une mélodie accrocheuse. Par exemle, les solos de guitare sur l'album “Dark Side Of The Moon” de PINK FLOYD sont si mélodiques et entraînants que vous pouvez fredonner l'air !!!
Tu es auteur, compositeur et multi-instrumentiste. Comment construis tu tes compositions, texte en premier ? Ecriture de la musique à la guitare ou au piano ?
Cela depend. Parfois j' ai une idée pour un morceau d'après un titre, une photo, une histoire, un sentiment. Alors, je bidouille dans mon studio jusqu'à ce qu'une mélodie se précise. Mais je peux aussi partir d'une rythmique, d'une suite d' accords jusqu'à ce qu'ils m'inspirent une histoire pour des paroles.
Tu n'hésites pas à incorporer des touches de Folk et de Folk Celtique. Cela provient de tes origines où simplement d'un choix artistique ?
Un choix. J'aime tout types de musique. Rock, Jazz , World, Folk. J' utilise donc ce que j'aime pour créer mes morceaux en mélangeant tous ces genres. Je laisse le morceau dicter quels arrangements il réquiert .
On est tous influencé par le Passé, on ne peut y couper ! Le truc est de créer quelque chose de neuf et d' inédit à partir de ça.
Qu'écoutais tu comme musique durant ta jeunesse ?
Premiers amours: Lindisfarne, Alice Cooper, Wishbone Ash, Jefferson Airplanes
Ensuite vinrent :Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis. ELP, King Crimson, PFM, Al Stewart, Roy Harper, John Martyn, Simon & Garfunkel, Caravan, Hatfield & The North, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Return to Forever, Jake Thackray, Georges Brassens, Weather Report, Steely Dan, Fairport Convention, Renaissance …et d'autres parmi une longue liste !
Et maintenant ?
Les mêmes !!!!! Mais se sont ajoutés quelques trucs plus récents :
Magenta, The Flower Kings, Spock’s Beard, Molly Bloom, Jeff Buckley,
Seth Lakeman, White Willow and more and more….
T'intéresses tu au paysage musical français, connais tu des artistes ou des groupes ?
J'en connais pas beaucoup. Evidément Brassens, et quelques albums de ANGE. Je serais très intéressé d'en connaître plus... Si vous pouviez m'indiquer un “ top 5” à découvrir
Ta collaboration avec Andy TILLISON remonte maintenant à plusieurs années et bien avant la formation de The TANGENT. Comment s'est passée votre rencontre ?
On s' est rencontré dans un studio où j' enrigistrais une radio sessions. Andy était l'ingénieur du son et le patron. On a été amis de suite, et ça fait plus de 25 ans ! On a travaillé sur “Gold”, “Frankincense and Disk Drive” pour devenir “Parallel or 90 degrees”.
J'imagine qu'il existe aujourd'hui une réelle complicité musicale et une amitié profonde ?
On n'a pas toujours les mêmes points de vue, heureusement ! On s' engueule aussi bien que l'on peut être d'accord. Ce qui est positif en fait, ce sont ces différences, ces compromis, ces décisions communes qui font de notre musique ce qu'elle est.
Aurons nous l'occasion d'apprécier ta musique sur scène et/ou celle de TANGENT en France ?
J'adorerais jouer en Europe. Tout ce qu'il manque c'est des organisateurs capables de prendre le risque financier de nous faire venir... Lancez les souscriptions !
The TANGENT sera en tournée européenne au printemps 2008 (en mai exactement) , mais je n'en serais pas... C'est une mini tournée avec un budget trés serré, en compagnie de deux autres groupes (RITUAL et BEARDFISH).
(dans l'immédiat rien de prévu en France hélas...)
J'espère qu'après cet entretien le public français connaîtra un peu mieux l'artiste Guy MANNING et je ne peux qu'encourager nos lecteurs à acheter "Song from the Bilton House".

Hi Guy, you' re a very busy man, as soon as you finished your new record "Song from the bilton House" , you continued with the new TANGENT "Not As Good As a Book ».
Are you a workahcolic ?
Yes ! :0)
I love to write songs and play…so I always say ”yes !” when asked to participate !
The TANGENT work is alot different to writing and producing my own albums though. With TANGENT, I get to have pure fun just being the singer or acoustics player and then help out with the vocal arrangements and other instruments too.
With my own stuff, I have to think about everything and act as the quality controller!
After all these years full of musical work, are pleased with the result of “Songs From the Bilston House” ?
Very ! The songs are good, the production is great, the artwork turned out really nicely – What’s not to like?
“Songs from the Bilston House” tells a story about an journey anecdote, can you tell us more about ?
Do you mean “Inner Moment” ?... That song is about having the courage to step out of the door on a journey knowing that you must find yourself, rid yourself of any ‘demons’ and be a better man when you return from it - It is a life changing voyage …
The album cover reminds me the Hitchtcock 's Psychose gloomy hotel ? Did you want this disturbing atmosphere or were just pleased with this aesthetic ?
The album was based on an old house I saw near Bilston in 2006. It was run down, broken and cold and looked mysterious. This is the effect that Rosie brought to all the artwork. The use of light and old rooms and furniture etc. makes it seem like a place unaffected by Time, where ghosts may still roam !
Each song is set in a different room and the artwork shows a floor plan of each room in the house.
Your compositions are often distinguished by a meticulous sense of melody. From where does it come ?
I do not know!
So far, it has just been there when I needed it. But, I have always liked a song with a good tune or a piece of music with a memorable melody. E.g. the guitar solos on Floyds’ ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ are so tuneful, that you can sing them!
You' re a writer, composer and you play lot of instruments. What comes first in compositions : The lyrics ? Writing the guitar or piano part ?
Depends…Some time I get an idea for a piece from a title, a picture, a story, an emotion. Then, I might play about in my studio until a musical idea comes together
OR I may have a rhythmic idea or a chord progression and put that together until it inspires a narrative for the lyrics.
I write on both keys and guitar and the end song will sound different as a result
You use touch of folk and celtic folk. Is this a choose or it's your origins ?
A choice.
I love all types of music. Rock, Jazz, World, Folk and so I will use what I love to blend together as a piece requires. I let the songs dictate what sort of arrangement they will have.
We are all influenced by the Past, no escape! The thing is to make something new and original out of it
What did you listen at during your youth ?

Your work with andy tillison dates from many years now, far before the creation of The Tangent. How did yo meet each other ?
We first actually met when I went o a local studio to record a radio session
Andy was the owner and engineer. We struck up a friendship from there and that was 25 + years ago!
We first worked as Gold, Frankincense & Disk-Drive later to become Parallel or 90 degrees
I guess you' re linked by a great friendship and you share the same view in music ?
Not always the same views!
We can argue over things as well as agree.
Which is good, actually. It is the differences and the compromises and firm decisions we make together that make our music what it eventually is.
Have you planned to play in France, by yourself or with the Tangent ?
I would LOVE to play Europe…all I need is to be asked and to have enough money to pay for us to come across…so start a campaign up !!
The Tangent will be doing a Spring 2008 European ‘whistle stop’ tour but I will not be part of this live line up as it going out on a very tight budget and involving 2 other bands as well.
I hope after this interview, the french audience know better Guy Manning, and I urge our readers to buy “Songs from the Bilston House “
